Fernovus Saratoga, pen name of Ioannes Rubis, is a 30 years old man living in Malatya and Zarif’s best friend. His grandparents moved to the Sultanate of Rum from the Byzantine Empire (hence he is bilingual with greek and turkish) to avoid the havy taxes which oppressed the countryside and generally most farmers: at the time there were more cristians than muslims in the Sultanate, so they had no difficulties in joining the town’s community.
He is not a strong Cristian observant, but is surely not a muslim; his love for books, translations and languages made him the most famous scholar in Zarif’s neighbourhood, helding a little school for children (more or less like a little medresa) where Ed is FORCED to go to learn some decent turkish.
He has a wife and a daughter, but is secretly -or not so much- very very vERY FOND OF ZARIF IN THE OTHER WAY. But they’re pretty cool with that.

Edward speaks funny since the setting is really at the beginning of the story so he struggles even with simple words. And he’s a sweet baby hence thinking FLOWERS WOULD SURELY MAKE A DEPRESSED MAN INSTANTLY HAPPY. Sweet summer child.
